The Roots of Migaam
Welcome to our table, where every dish carries a story steeped in the rich tapestry of Corean family traditions.
As the eldest son in a line of eldest sons, my father shouldered the honor of preserving our customs and leading family gatherings. The heart of these gatherings was the kitchen, where I observed the preparation of traditional Corean dishes by the woman in our family. From homemade gochujang to soy sauce and soybean paste, every dish was crafted by the expert hands of my grandmother and great grandmother. These family recipes, later mastered by my mother, defined our family’s culinary legacy. Yet, within the warmth of tradition, I felt the weight of tireless service on the women of our family. Modern conveniences were set aside in the name of tradition, and flawless execution was deemed necessary to preserve the family’s honor.
Living abroad amid diverse cultures, I often contemplated my identity as a Corean woman and sought an outlet of expression to forge a firmer sense of self while making a positive impact on the world. Reflecting on the customs that shaped my upbringing, the slow and thoughtful artistry of crafting tteok and hankwa became my guide to self-understanding. I delved into lessons with master craftspeople to harness the different regional methods, earning national certification for tteok craftsmanship.
Corean cuisine, especially delicacies like tteok and hankwa, demands hours of meticulous effort and patience. In these moments, I realized the women of my family shared the same yearning to do good, dedicating themselves to caring for loved ones. With this revelation, I came to embrace what once felt like a forceful sacrifice as expressions of love through acts of service. Following in their footsteps, I committed to carrying forward their legacy and gained a profound understanding of my family’s heritage through my exploration of Corean delicacies.
